May is mental health awareness month, but what does that mean? For many people, it’s a time to reflect on their own mental health and make sure that they are taking care of themselves. It’s also a time to raise awareness about mental health in general and help reduce the stigma around mental illness.

Mental health is an important issue all year round, but making it a priority in May can help start the conversation and make a difference in people’s lives. May has been observed as mental health awareness month since 1949, and mental health awareness week has been observed since 1955. In 1992, mental health America (then known as the national mental health association) launched mental health month to raise awareness about mental illness and mental health.

Mental health awareness month is a time to learn more about mental illness and how it can affect people’s lives. It’s also a time to talk about mental health in a way that doesn’t stigmatize those who live with mental illness. Making mental health a priority can help create a society that is more understanding and supportive of those who live with mental illness.
