British Pottery roundup for 2021

Mar 20

There’s just something magical about a cup of tea from a British teapot.

UK Ceramics is all about craftsmanship. It’s about taking the lead from the past and the present and building on the work of people who came before you. In a lot of ways, the fundamentals of pottery haven’t changed that much over the years. Founded in London in 1793, Wedgwood is a luxury brand that is still family-owned. It has a big presence in the UK and is well-known in the ceramics industry, but it’s not as well known in the US. It makes everything from plates and cups to vases and tea sets.

Introducing British Pottery

The ceramics made in Britain from the late 18th century onwards are collectively known as British pottery.  There are many great modern potters in the UK right now, including the likes of David Backes and Emma Bridgewater. These potters are using clay in a variety of ways, from taking advantage of the material’s ability to clean to infusing their work with personality.  If you're looking for a unique gift idea for the home, get inspired by these fashionable ceramics. From quirky to beautiful, there's something to suit all tastes and a range of budgets.

Toby Pitman
A great example of this is Toby Pitman, who has had a successful career as a potter, but has also created a digital presence for himself and his business online. Toby has a presence on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram which he uses to share his work, blog posts and other news about his business. If you’re in the UK and want to see what the latest trends in ceramics are, then you should visit the Business Design Centre in Islington. It’s the largest venue of its kind, and hosts events and exhibitions about all things design.
Waterford Crystal
The British ceramics industry is alive and well, with many potteries still producing high-quality tableware. Waterford Crystal is still the most famous of the Irish brands, but other brands like Wedgwood and Royal Doulton are equally as popular.
Andrew Burton
Andrew Burton is a New Zealand-born artist who now lives and works in the UK. He is known for his bright, contemporary ceramics. You can also use your knowledge of ceramics to make some money by becoming an online retailer. There are a lot of different UK ceramic shops to choose from, and it’s a lot easier to become a retailer with them than it is to become one with a website or an e-commerce platform.
Old Tupton Ware
Is a brand created in 2001 in the village of Tupton Ware made from earthenware clay and artisans tubeline and handpaint each piece for a unique and detailed design.  Old Tupton Ware is building a following in the UK and continues to create new designs each year.

A summary of Pottery made in Britain

I collect British pottery and I love the way the craftsmanship in British pottery is very much a part of the history of Great Britain. I love the way that the same pottery is still being produced in the same way it was 200 years ago.  There’s a lot of exciting things happening in the UK ceramics scene at the moment. Here are just a few of the potters I’m currently watching.
